Clippers Buying Guide
1. Price
A good set of clippers will set you back around $50 to $100. There are also cheaper (or lower quality) and much pricier kits available online. Just keep in mind that professional barbershop-quality clippers are typically created for everyday, long-wearing, professional use. Because your set will only be used every couple of weeks at the most, they don’t need to be the same professional-grade clippers your barber uses, but it helps get you closer to the barbershop-quality results you want.
2. Function
The motor is one of the most important parts of your clippers because you don’t want it to die out after just a few uses. A motor that is too weak can’t move the blades fast enough, and a motor that is too powerful can easily overheat. You want the clippers to stay cool during use, so see if it has a built-in air-cooling system (higher quality models tend to). You will also need to see if the clippers can be used on wet hair, or if it is water-safe for cleaning. Cutting your hair is best done with wet hair after washing. Make sure your hair is totally clean and conditioned by using Dove Men + Care Complete Care Fortifying 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner.
3. Size
Look for a set that is lightweight and easy to maneuver. When cutting your own hair, you don’t want clippers that are too heavy and awkward in your hands. If you aren’t comfortable with your clippers, it can lead to an uneven cut. The blades should be an inch long or slightly longer; any shorter will make cutting your hair take too long.
4. Blades
Most blades should be made of stainless steel. This makes it fairly durable and gives a good clean cut. Look for clippers with self-sharpening blades too, which are easier to maintain. You can also find blades with a ceramic edge that will be more durable and stay cool while in use, but keep in mind that these might come with a higher price tag.
5. Extras
Make sure the kit comes with different guide combs to get the right length. You may do fine with a smaller set of four guide combs, but you can get more looks out of a kit that comes with more. Look for a set that comes with six or seven guide combs. A storage case and an extra charging cord are also nice extras that can make your life easier.
